Description

"An insane German sent back to the Fatherland" - On his arrival in North Tonawanda form Hamburg Henry Sommerfelt boards at Yerkley's on Robinson Street and then Hotel DeHamburg on Ganson Street (23 Ganson supposedly built 1920). "He reveled in his liquor and carousals until about May [ILLEGIBLE]" when he is arrested and fined. After paying the fine his "queer" behavior intensifies. Overseer of the Poor Capt. James Ennis is brought in. Sommerfelt is declared insane by experts, sent to County Alms House at Lockport, and ultimately back to Germany. "It is not an easy matter for insane alien paupers to remain here if only the right man puts his shoulder to the wheel." (A Mr. J. Q. Harvard, ex-Inspector of Immigration, is faulted in this article for neglecting to deport the German from Lockport).
