Description
Article claims company organized in 1885 in response to need to enforce Niagara Falls State Reservation of that year. H. William Feder notes that the company also was used "to protect the investments of the coming Tunnel project," noting that "the wood frame Niagara County Armory was placed on a high vantage point [6th and Walnut] from which access to the Tunnel construction area could be observed and controlled. The 42nd Company commander was Col. Charles B. Gaskill, the president of the new Hydraulic Tunnel Corps of Army Engineers Survey. In the coming years the 42nd Company shared a complementary mythology with the military mission of Deveaux College that is worthy of review." (The Evolution of an Ethnic Neighborhood that Became United in Diversity - The East Side, Niagara Falls, NY, 1880-1930 (H. William Feder, 1999)
Article also claims the company was dispatched to Tonawanda to quell labor troubles among canal men on June 14, 1862 and on June 21, 1893 (This NY Times article says the 1893 date should be June 16th).
