Ancestry and descendants of Henry Perkins Smith and Christiana (Long) Smith (excerpts).jpg
Description
From this long and detailed family history, we excerpt the following fascinating accounts:
(pp 166-189) Early life of (Pennsylvania Dutch) Benjamin Long and Mary (Hershey) Long, their move from Pennsylvania to Niagara County, their real estate deals and holdings, family, the route they took, the construction of the Long homestead, early school and church involvement by the Longs, the division of the property among heirs, and a detailed recollections of Christiana (Long) Smith. Christiana is the grandmother of the family history writer, who is philosophical about their not-too-close relationship: "She was 73 years old when I was born and past the age of being pleased with the noise and antics of young children."
(pp201-203) Mary's father Christian Hershey's 1814 trip on horseback to the Niagara frontier to buy hundreds of acres of newly available New York State Mile Reserve tracts with the gold bursting from his saddle bags. Another purchase he makes is Lot 83, containing Long Point, future site of the Long homestead. Here he plants pear trees brought from Witmer's farm and, according to family tradition digs a well. He deeds these lands to his children on June 25, 1815, and dies in October 1824.
